Background

Founded by four passionate yogis

Shiva Yoga Studio was founded by four passionate yogis in record time, determined to continue bringing yoga to the people after the closing of Sivaya Yoga Studio.

The former Sivaya Yoga Studio was established by Mr Siva Sivakumar — fondly known as Siva — who brought Hatha Yoga to South Africa over 22 years ago. It was under his training and guidance that many of our teachers began their yoga journey. The teaching of Siva's sequence is included as part of our class timetable.

What is yoga?

To unite and connect

Yoga means to unite or connect — harmonising and balancing the body, mind and emotions. This can be achieved through Asana (the physical practice of poses), Pranayama (using the breath), Samadhi (meditation) and various other practices.

It is about connecting with yourself and your body, meeting yourself exactly where you are in the moment. It is not about being flexible or striving to look a certain way. If you are willing to listen, your body will let you know what it needs.

Connect to your breath — your life force. As you move through your practice, draw your attention to it; you have the power to change your breath in an instant.
