Background
Shiva Yoga Studio was founded by four passionate yogis in record time. They were determined to continue to bring yoga to the people after the closing of Sivaya Yoga Studio. The photograph attached was taken at their founding meeting and captures their enthusiasm and love for yoga.
The former Sivaya Yoga Studio was established by Mr Siva Sivakumar (fondly known as Siva) who brought Hatha Yoga to South Africa over 22 years ago. It was under his training and guidance that many of our teachers commenced their yoga journey. The teaching of Siva’s sequence is included as part of the Shiva Yoga Studio class timetable.
what is yoga?
Yoga means to unite or connect. This unity refers to harmonizing and balancing the body, mind and emotions. This can be achieved through Asana which is the physical practice of poses, Pranayama using the breath and Samadhi (meditation) and various other practices.
Yoga is about connecting with yourself and your body. It is meeting yourself exactly where you are in the moment. It is not about being flexible or striving to look a certain way. If you are willing to listen, your body will let you know what it needs in that moment.
Yoga helps quieten the mind, the constant chatter and judgement that goes on in the background.
Connecting to your breath, your life force that keeps you going. As you move through your yoga practice draw your attention to your breath. It will give you an indication of what you are experiencing at the moment. You have the power to change your breath in an instant by taking a deep breath.
